Dr. Raymond Lloyd Smith was born on January 25, 1917 in Vanceboro, Maine and grew up in that area. He attended the University of Alaska, graduating in 1943 with a degree in mining engineering and a minor in metallurgy. From 1943-1946 he served with the Ordnance Corps of the United States Army. A native of Bessemer, Michigan, Margaret Holley Chapman grew up in Lake Linden and graduated from Calumet High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lawrence College in 1932 and went on to attend Michigan College of Mining and Technology, becoming the first female to receive a degree from the college.
